The never ending scarf

Sometimes you get a bit cocky as a knitter--like when you have quite a few (ok, 2) projects that come out exactly as you anticipate and that you can strut around showing off like you created the universe. Then you cast on for something as basic as a scarf, made long-wise....

So my disclaimer is that I actually consulted some (@!*(%!*) pattern somewhere to get a ballpark estimate of how many stitches to cast on. No I did not do a swatch. I repeat, I DID NOT DO A SWATCH. I repent. (My penance, however, has already been performed in the sheer making of this crazy thing!) It was supposed to be a ruffle scarf, so after I cast on who knows how many stitches, I then proceeded to increase in every stitch, and then I increased in every stitch on the next row as well. By this time I had so many stitches crammed onto my poor circular needle that I actually had to shove half of the stitches onto a second circular needle (29"). That should have been the writing on the wall right there, but I didn't really realize how out of control it had gotten until I started casting off..... and casting off.... and casting off.... OK, so it took me four days to cast off this bloody thing. On day two, when I finally got through all the stitches on the first needle I rejoiced, even though I knew I was only halfway done and I already had a ruffle 8 feet long or something.

My crochet group that I go to on Saturdays had a good laugh as I pulled the end of the "scarf" out of my bag and then just kept pulling it out and pulling it out, like some kind of freaky magic trick. It was sad.

So my plan, now that I actually have this behemoth thing off the needles, is to cut it in half and double each section so that I have two double-ruffle scarves. Maybe after I get through the cutting and sewing of this project I'll have enough gumption to try a few steeks?
